BMI270 - Sensors won't power up/get out of standby mode

Has anyone gotten BMI270 to work using just Python (not COINES Environment)? I am trying to use a program based on BMI160, converted to the 270 and I can't get sensors to turn on. Power register indicates accelerometer and gyroscope turned on, and have set the full scale reading but sensors just do not provide readings. Any ideas?
