Step counting while powering off MCU and VDDIO.
Will the BMX160 continue to keep track of steps internally if the VDDIO power line is turned off? VDD will be kept at 3.0V while VDDIO is toggled with the MCU.

Hi,
Thanks for your inquiry. BMX160 step counter will not work when VDD is on and VDDIO is off.
Thanks.

Could you explain what is the purpose of VDDIO?

Hi,
VDDIO is a power supply input mainly for the digital domain of BMX160 such as digital interface, interrupt engine, FIFO operation and other built-in features. VDDIO must work with VDD together in order for BMX160 to work properly.
In most use cases the system has only one power rail so that users can tie BMX160 VDD and VDDIO pin together to the power supply. However, there are some cases the system has two or more power rails. For example, the systems uses 3.3V for control and 1.8V for MCU. Then users can tie BMX160 VDD to 3.3V and VDDIO to 1.8V so that the MCU can talk to BMX160 through I2C or SPI interface directly without the need of level shifter.
Thanks.
