I see several motion triggered FIFO data capture facilities. Can the IMU be configured to perform FIFO data capture based on an external interrupt?Is it possible to have an external interupt trigger data capture in the FIFO

Quite the opposite, the FIFO can capture the state of the Interrupt pin when the data is sampled.

You are referring to the header of the fifo frame reflects the state of the Interrupt pins as of the moment the frame is begun? So the interrupt doesn't trigger the fifo capture. There really isn't any triggering - it is more like the interrupts are sampled once a frame?

Since the gyro needs to be in continous oscillation for measurement, and that it takes up to 80ms to spin-up, triggered MEMS gyroscope measurements are not really possible.

Your are correct that the status of the Interrupt pin can be sampled synchronous with the data sampling. See 2.5.2.4 FIFO synchronization with external events
