Yes, we expect the BME680 to be sensitive to Benzene. Of course in your application, it will depend on the concentration you are trying to detect and on the other gases present in the mixture at the same time.

Maybe I can add a little bit here:
BME680 is sensitive to hundreds of VOCs, which are present in different amount in the environment. The target use-case for BME680 is indoor air quality monitoring, so the IAQ vector has been modeled with gas mixtures of the pollutants you would typically find indoors.

Although the BME680 does not sense CO2 directly, the CO2 equivalent output assumes that the source of the pollution is human breath. If the source of CO2 is different, then this output would not closely correlate with CO2 measurements

What also is very interesting:

The BME680 "detect" the smell of flowers (flowering plants) ... 😉   (I think some of them)

If you open the window in such a case that the smell of flowering plants is noticeable outside - the IAQ inside will be bad (>150...200) instead of lower value.
So not in any case it can be perfect 😉
