PlatformIO IDE plugin 3.3.3, arduino with Adafruit_BME280_Library.

We have encountered unusual readings with the BME280 sensors, temperature has been a bugbear, but the real show stopper is that we have seen an unexpected 100% relative humidity reading that remained for multiple days. Power cycle didn't recover it.
One such device under test is situated in an office environment with the device out of the way of liquids and mounted on the wall - I cannot see an environmental reason for this occurring.
We have our own boards and have made sure that they were soldered in a way that suits this particular sensor's recommendations.
During research I was alarmed to read that people were recommending to follow the reconditioning procedure.
I'm reaching out hoping that there is an alternative to this that I'm not seeing, and general advice welcome.
