By reading the BME280 manual https://ae-bst.resource.bosch.com/media/_tech/media/datasheets/BST-BME280-DS002.pdf I have some questions I would like to clarify. Looking at figure 1 at page 10, I wonder what happens if the sensor is found outside the operating range? Is it getting destroyed? A temporary measurement offset is introduced? Should we be worried that a measurement offset is introduced when the sensor stays for long time in very high (>80%) or very mow (<20%) relative humidity?

We do not expect the sensor to be damaged by such operations, but the sensing performance can be temporarily degraded. In such a case, we recommend following the reconditioning procedure (see chapter 7.9) to restore the humidity sensor's performance.
