Bosch Step Counter 'Step' Definition: 1 Step or 1 Stride (2 steps)?

The question I'm asking pertains to the BMI 160's Step Detector as well as BMA 400's Step Counter, but I would hope the answer is consistent across all Bosch Step Counters.

What is the definition of a 'step'? Is it:

1. 1 step (putting 1 foot down)

2. 1 stride (AKA 1 gait cycle, or 1 step left + 1 step right, 2 steps total)

I do not see this specified in the documentation, and it seems that people interpret this differently.

Each step of the step counter for BMI160 and BMA400 refers to a value of 1 step, not 1 stride (AKA 1 gait cycle, or 1 step left + 1 step right, 2 steps total).
